The Amur River is a large tributary on the left (eastern) bank of the Amur River in the Russian Far East. It is 1,242 km long and has a drainage area of 233,000 km2. It begins on the southern slope of the Stanovoy Mountains, and the main river and many tributaries join the Upper Zeya Basin. It then crosses several mountain ranges, passes through a gorge called the Zeya Gate, and enters the Zeya-Bureya Plain, before flowing south and joining the Amur River downstream of the city of Blagoveshchensk. The plain is rich in old river channels, marshes, and oxbow lakes, forming a typical floodplain. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
