A native woman who is said to have helped bring about the downfall of the Aztec Empire. She was one of the slave women given as booty to Cortes in 1519 when he fought the Maya on the coast of Tabasco. She spoke the Aztec language (Nahuatl) and served as an interpreter. She was also his lover, leaving him with a child. In Mexico, she is generally considered a traitor, but she has been reevaluated by women in the women's liberation movement.
