Hokuetsu Seppu

This book describes the nature and life of Echigo in the late Edo period. The author was Suzuki Bokushi, a native of Shiozawa, Echigo. It is divided into two parts: Sankyo Mountain and Sankyo Water. It consists of a total of seven volumes, the first part in three volumes and the second part in four volumes. The first part was published in 1837 (Tenpo 8), and the second part in 1841. As the title suggests, the book is centered on descriptions of snow from a natural science perspective, and it can be said to be a pioneering Japanese scientific journal. It also describes the industry and life of Echigo, making it a valuable resource for research on economic history and folklore. There are many illustrations, which help understand the text. It is said that Bokushi's motivation for writing this book was a trip to Edo when he was around 20 years old. It is assumed that he wanted to inform the world of the state of his hometown, which was doomed to be "snowy" compared to the glamorous life in Edo. Makino had been planning this publication since his late twenties, but faced repeated setbacks and it took him a full 40 years to achieve his goal.

江戸時代後期の越後(えちご)の自然と生活を描写した書物。著者は越後塩沢の人、鈴木牧之(ぼくし)。山東京山編、山東京水画。初編3巻、2編4巻の計7巻からなる。初編は1837年（天保8）、2編は1841年に出版された。書名のとおり、雪を自然科学的な目からとらえた記述が中心をなし、日本の科学誌の先駆的存在といえるものである。一方、越後の産業や生活についても記されており、経済史および民俗学の研究にとって貴重な資料となっている。挿絵が多く入れてあり、本文の理解を助けてくれる。牧之がかかる書物を著す動機となったのは、20歳前後の江戸行きにあるといわれている。華やかな江戸の生活に比べ、「雪」という宿命を負わされた故郷の様相を世間に知らせたいという願いからであったと推察される。牧之はすでに20代後半からこの出版を計画していたが、頓挫(とんざ)を繰り返し、目的を達成するまでには実に40年の歳月が費やされた。
