Common golden-eye duck (English spelling)
A bird of the Anatidae family (illustration). It breeds in the subarctic and north of the Northern Hemisphere and winters in temperate regions. It migrates to Japan as a winter bird. It mainly lives in the sea, such as bays, inlets, and estuaries in northern Japan, but can sometimes be seen in freshwater lakes and ponds. It dives using its feet and wings to eat shellfish attached to rocks. The male is about 47 cm long. The sexes are different, with males having a black-green head and back and a white body. It got its name from a large, prominent white spot on its cheek. The female has a brown head, a rich brown back, and a gray band on her chest.
