Advances in speech recognition and speech synthesis technologies have paved the way for the practical use of human speech as a means of input and output for computers. A speech recognition device recognizes speech as words based on a registered dictionary, and a code pre-assigned to the recognized word is input into the computer. To check whether the speech has been recognized correctly, the input results must be shown to the operator on a display or other device, and the input operation must be performed interactively. There are two types of speech output: one that simply edits recorded speech word by word under computer control and outputs it, and one that outputs words generated by the computer using speech synthesis.

コンピューターの情報入出力として人間の音声を使用することは，音声認識技術，音声合成技術の進歩によって実用化の道が開かれた。音声認識装置は音声を登録された辞書に基づき単語として認識するので，コンピューターへは認識された単語にあらかじめ割り当てられたコードが入力される。音声が正しく認識されたか否かを確認するため，ディスプレーなどで入力結果をオペレーターに表示し会話的に入力操作を行う必要がある。　音声出力は，単純に単語単位に録音された音声をコンピューター制御で編集して出力するものと，コンピューターが生成した単語を音声合成で出力するものがある。
