...Ukiyo-e Artist: Purple Hood, written by Susukita Rokkuhei and directed by Kanamori Bansho, starring Ichikawa Hataya, was full of freshness in every respect: the sense of speed with which the screen unfolds, the mysterious romantic charm of the story, the vividness of the nihilistic characters, and the realism of the sword fight scenes. Following the great success of this work, Makino Films produced a series of period dramas written by Susukita Rokkuhei, such as Handprints in Fresh Blood and The Slain directed by Numata Koryoku, and Reverse Flow and Edo Phantom Thief: Kageboshi directed by Futagawa Buntaro. Bando Tsumasaburo, who starred in these films, became an instant star and was even called the "King of Swordplay." Bando Tsumasaburo then went independent and teamed up with the duo Susukita and Futagawa to create Orochi (1925), an explosive portrayal of the ronin's resistance and rebellious spirit in a spectacular brawl scene.
