Long-winged planthopper

Japanese: ハネナガウンカ

A general term for insects belonging to the Hemiptera family Derbidae. They are distributed widely throughout the world, but many species live in tropical regions in particular. Approximately 1,000 species are known to date. Most are small or medium-sized, but as the name "wing length" suggests, their wings are large compared to their body, and some species, such as the Zoraida genus, have long forewings that are three times longer than their body length. In the Rhotana genus, both the forewings and hindwings are wide and large. In species that live in temperate regions such as Japan, adults appear from summer to autumn.

半翅目ハネナガウンカ科Derbidaeに属する昆虫の総称。世界に広く分布しているが，とくに熱帯地方に多くの種が生息している。現在までに約1000種ほどが知られている。小型あるいは中型のものが多いが，〈翅長〉の名のように翅は体に比べて大きく，Zoraida属などのように体長の3倍の長さに達する長大な前翅を有するものがある。Rhotana属などでは前翅，後翅ともに幅広で大きい。日本のように温帯に分布する種では夏から秋にかけて成虫が出現する。
