Akashi Jiro - Akashi Jiro
Year of death: September 2, 1679 (October 6, 1679)
Year of birth: 16th January 16th (1620.2.19)
A legendary figure who is said to have brought the weaving technique of chijimi to Ojiya in Echigo Province (Niigata Prefecture) in the early Edo period. His real name was Hori Jiro Masatoshi, and Akashi Jiro was his nickname. He was a samurai of the Matsudaira clan of Akashi Domain, but after a period of wandering, he settled in the Ojiya region at the beginning of the Kanbun era (around 1661). Linen had been produced in Ojiya since ancient times, but Akashi is said to have invented chijimi fabric by tightly twisting the weft thread, and developed high-quality chijimi fabric suitable for summer with various stripes and white patterns. From the latter half of the 17th century, Ojiya chijimi gained a reputation in the three major cities as a high-quality linen fabric. In commemoration of his achievements, Akashido was built at Gokurakuji Temple (Ojiya City), and festivals are held twice a year, in spring and autumn. <References> Nishiwaki Shinjiro, "Ojiya Chijimi History," Kodama Shozaburo, "Research on the History of Echigo Chijimi"
