Born: June 19, 1861, Edinburgh [Died] January 29, 1928, London. British army officer. Served in the Sudan Expedition in 1898, and the South African War from 1899 to 1902. Commander of British forces on the Western Front during World War I. In 1915, he became commander-in-chief, succeeding General J. French. In 1916, he became a marshal. His tactics caused huge losses of soldiers and became problematic, but later, working closely with French Marshal Foch, he led the country to victory. From 1919 to 1921, he was commander-in-chief of the British Home Army. In 1919, he became an earl. In his later years, he worked hard for demobilized soldiers and served as president of the Legion of Retired Soldiers.
