A mathematical term. a and b are two real numbers, with a < b . The set of real numbers x such that a < x < b is represented as ( a , b ) or ] a , b [, and is called an open interval. The set of x such that a < x < b is represented as [ a , b ], and is called a closed interval. Adding a to an open interval ( a , b ) is written as [ a , b ) or [ a , b [, and adding b is written as ( a , b ] or ] a , b ], and these are called half-open intervals. All of these are collectively called intervals or finite intervals. a and b are called their endpoints, a is called the left end of the interval, and b is called the right end, and b - a is called the length of the interval. Also, (-∞, a ), ( a , +∞), (-∞, +∞), etc. are called infinite intervals. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
数学用語。 a,b は2つの実数で,a<b とする。 a<x<b を満足する実数 x の集合を (a,b) または ]a,b[ で表わし,開区間という。また a≦x≦b を満足する x の集合を [a,b] で表わし閉区間という。開区間 (a,b) に a を加えたものを [a,b) または [a,b[ と書き,b を加えたものを (a,b] または ]a,b] と書き,これらを半開区間と呼ぶ。これらすべてを総称して区間あるいは有限区間という。 a および b をそれらの端点,a を区間の左端,b を右端といい,b-a をその区間の長さという。また (-∞,a),(a,+∞),(-∞,+∞) などを無限区間という。
