A temple of the Koyasan Shingon sect in Hirabayashi-cho, Misasagi, Yamashina-ku, Kyoto City. It is also called "Anjo-ji" and is called Kissho-zan. It was founded in 848 (Kasho 1) to celebrate the longevity of Empress Junna. The original patron of the construction was Emperor Ninmyo's Empress Fujiwara no Junshi, and the temple was founded by the monk Eun, who had traveled to China. During the reign of the 11th head priest, Soi (1074-1148), the temple flourished greatly, and he established the Anjo-ji school, becoming the leading temple of the three Ono schools in terms of jiso (the etiquette of esoteric Buddhism practice), and imparting and transmitting the Dharma. However, during the Sengoku period, the temple was ravaged by war and had its stipend confiscated for not following the orders of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, causing it to fall into decline. Furthermore, during the Meiji era, the temple buildings and pagodas fell into disrepair and the temple treasures were scattered. Currently, the temple treasures include the principal image, the Eleven-Headed Kannon, the Five Wisdom Buddhas (a national important cultural property), and Jizo Bodhisattva.
