Durgati - Evil Realm

Japanese: 悪趣 - あくしゅ（英語表記）durgati

A Buddhist term. Also called the evil path. A state of existence resulting from evil deeds. The three evil realms of hell, hungry ghosts, and animals are called the four evil realms, while the three evil realms are called the four evil realms of asura. The five evil realms are called the five evil realms of humans and heaven, and the six realms are called the six realms. In Buddhism, it is believed that there is suffering not only in human existence but even in heaven, and that a state in which these lives do not repeat, namely liberation or nirvana, is the ultimate ideal.

仏教用語。悪道ともいう。悪業の結果受ける生存の状態。地獄，餓鬼 (がき) ，畜生 (ちくしょう) の三悪趣，それに修羅 (しゅら) を加えて四悪趣，三悪趣に人と天を加えて五悪趣，五悪趣に修羅を加えて六道 (ろくどう) ともいう。仏教では，人間としての生存はもとより，天上界にすらも苦しみがあると考え，これらの生存を繰返さない状態，すなわち解脱 (げだつ) ，涅槃 (ねはん) が究極の理想とされる。
