The transmission of secret teachings related to the Kokin Wakashu. In medieval academic and artistic circles, particularly important parts were often passed down as secret teachings. In waka studies, secret teachings were passed down from the Tale of Genji and the Tales of Ise, among which the Kokin Denju was the most authoritative. Because the Kokin Wakashu was considered the standard for waka poetry, interpretations of it diverged early on, and each family of waka poets, such as the Rokujo and Mikohidari families, passed down their own interpretations as secret teachings. In the Muromachi period, Tono Tsuneyori, a descendant of the Nijo family, combined the secret teachings of the Azuma family with those of Gyocho, who descended from the Ton'a family, to create the prototype of the so-called Kokin Denju.

《古今和歌集》に関する秘伝の授受。中世の学問芸能では，特に重要な部分を秘伝として伝承することが多かった。歌学においては《源氏物語》や《伊勢物語》などの秘伝が伝えられたが，その中で最も権威をもっていたのが古今伝受である。《古今和歌集》は和歌の規範とされていたため早くからその解釈に説が分かれ，六条家や御子左家（みこひだりけ）など歌道の家々には，それぞれの解釈が秘伝として伝えられていた。室町時代に入って二条家の末流である東常縁（とうのつねより）が，東家に伝わる秘伝のほかに頓阿の流れをくむ尭孝の秘伝をあわせて，いわゆる古今伝受の原型をつくった。
