The capital of Roraima State in northern Brazil. Population 118,928 (1991). About 800 km north of Manaus on the national highway. It is located on a plateau at an altitude of 90 m overlooking the Branco River, a tributary of the Amazon River. It is a branch point to Caracas in Venezuela and Guyana, has an airport, and is one of the centers of northern Amazonia. The state produces diamonds, gold, bauxite, etc., and is a distribution center for agricultural products (rice, corn, cassava). ブラジル北部のロライマ州の州都。人口11万8928(1991)。マナウスから北に国道で約800km。アマゾン川の支流ブランコ川に臨む標高90mの台地上に位置する。ベネズエラのカラカス,ガイアナ方面への分岐点で,空港があり,アマゾニア北部の一中心となっている。州内ではダイヤモンド,金,ボーキサイトなどを産し,農産物(米,トウモロコシ,キャッサバ)の集散地。周辺に石灰洞が多く,洞窟内の教会グルッタ・サンツァリオがある。
