The capital of Roraima State in northern Brazil. Population 118,928 (1991). About 800 km north of Manaus on the national highway. It is located on a plateau at an altitude of 90 m overlooking the Branco River, a tributary of the Amazon River. It is a branch point to Caracas in Venezuela and Guyana, has an airport, and is one of the centers of northern Amazonia. The state produces diamonds, gold, bauxite, etc., and is a distribution center for agricultural products (rice, corn, cassava). There are many limestone caves in the surrounding area, and the Gruta Sant'Azur is a church inside the cave.
