Why are there six main types of coral reefs and why is there a pattern to their distribution? In 1842, C. Darwin pointed out three basic types of coral reefs: fringing reefs, barrier reefs, and atolls, and proposed the subsidence theory, which states that fringing reefs evolved into barrier reefs and then atolls as land subsidence, i.e., ocean floor subsidence, occurred. JD Dana then proposed in 1853 that the curvature of the coastline of islands behind coral reefs and the existence of drowned valleys were topographical evidence for the subsidence theory.
