…But when the sons of Aegyptus pursued Danaus and demanded that he marry his daughters, Danaus was forced to agree, but gave each of his daughters a dagger and had them kill their husbands on the wedding night. In later legends, the 49 daughters, except for Hypermnestra, who was the only one who did not kill her husband, Lynceus (who later became king of Argos and became the ancestor of the hero Perseus), were punished by being filled with water in a jar with a hole in it in the underworld after death.
