King of England (reigned 1509-1547). Second son of Henry VII. A devout Catholic, he came into conflict with the Pope due to his love affair with Anne Boleyn and the complicated divorce issue with the queen. In 1534, he issued the Act of Supremacy, making himself head of the Church of England, breaking away from the Church of Rome, dissolving monasteries and confiscating their property. Although he was a cruel man, having changed wives six times and executed many of his close associates, he contributed to the establishment of an absolutist English state. Father of Elizabeth I. → Related topics: Legend of the Bluebeard | Anglican Church | England | Edward VI | Elizabeth I | Catherine of Aragon | Cranmer | Clement VII | Cromwell | Duke of Somerset | Skelton | Tudor dynasty | Holbein | Mary I | More Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
