The capital of Katsina State in northern Nigeria, West Africa. Population 201,500 (1995). Founded around the 12th century, it flourished as a trading city during the Saharan trade era. It was the capital of a Hausa kingdom, but converted to Islam in the 14th century and developed into a center of Islamic learning and education. It was conquered by the Fulani in the early 19th century, and came under British control in 1903. It is also a trading center for groundnuts and cattle.
