… The English or French word bande originally meant a group, especially an army, but it was in the 17th century that ensembles were likened to this word, and the French "Les vingt-quatre violons du roi," a string ensemble of 24 men, was called "La grande bande," and following this, the band of King Charles II of England was called "The King's Private Band." In this case, it had a meaning close to an orchestra, but in England the word band eventually came to be represented by "brass band" or "military band." Brass band means a brass ensemble (including percussion instruments). …
