A historical book compiled during the Heian period. It was compiled by Sugawara no Michizane in 892 (Kanpei 4) at the request of the emperor. It is a compilation of articles from the Five National Histories starting with the Nihon Shoki, divided into over ten parts covering topics such as gods, emperors, seasonal events, music, politics, and criminal law. As the text of the Nihon Sandai Jitsuroku, which was compiled and presented by Michizane after his editor Michizane was demoted, is included in the Ruiju Kokushi, it is said that it was later supplemented by several people. Not only is it useful for finding articles from the Six National Histories, it also fills in gaps in the Nihon Koki, making it an indispensable basic historical resource for the study of ancient history. Originally, it was a huge work consisting of 200 volumes of the history, two volumes of the catalogue, and three volumes of the imperial genealogy (Ninnaji Book Catalog), but it was lost after the Onin War, and today only 61 volumes remain. Traditionally, the edition edited by Sengoku Masakazu has been considered the best, but the "Kokushi Taikei" edition has collated various versions and is useful for learning about the differences and similarities between them.
