Tonan

A district in Morioka City, Iwate Prefecture. In 1955, the three villages of Mirmae, Iioka, and Otobe merged to form Tonan Village in Shiwa County, but in 1992 it was incorporated into Morioka City. The Kitakami River flows south through the center of the district. The district is served by the Tohoku Main Line, National Route 4, and the Tohoku Expressway, and is home to the Morioka Minami Interchange. It was once a suburban farming village, but it has become a commuter town for Morioka City and arable land has been decreasing. It is home to the Iwate Distribution Center and Central Wholesale Market, and is aiming to develop as a distribution base for the northern Tohoku region. Branches and offices of major companies have set up along the national highway. Vegetables and greenhouse horticulture are popular in the Iioka and Otobe districts. Nagai's Dainenbutsu, a type of sword dance, is a nationally designated Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property.

岩手県盛岡市にある一地区。1955年（昭和30）見前(みるまえ)、飯岡(いいおか)、乙部(おとべ)の三村が合併して、紫波郡(しわぐん)の都南村が成立したが、1992年（平成4）盛岡市に編入された。この地区の中央を北上(きたかみ)川が南流している。東北本線、国道4号、東北自動車道が通じ、盛岡南インターチェンジがある。近郊農村であったが、盛岡市のベッドタウン化し、耕地は減少の傾向にあった。岩手流通センター、中央卸売市場などがあり、東北地方北部の流通拠点としての発展を目ざしている。国道沿いには大手企業の支店、事業所が進出。飯岡、乙部地区は野菜、ハウス園芸が盛んである。剣舞(けんばい)の一種「永井の大念仏」は国指定重要無形民俗文化財。
