…When Christian theology, which had been linked to Aristotelianism since the 12th century, accepted the Greek view of the universe as scholasticism, the literature related to Plato and Neoplatonism, which had been rejected half-consciously, was translated into Latin in the late 15th century, mainly in Florence, and developed into a thought movement, and the worship of Helios (strong in Hermeticism and Neoplatonism) that was embedded in it swept across the Western world. M. Ficino, a leading figure in Florentine Platonism, wrote De sole et lumine (On the Sun and the Light), which set the precedent, but N. Copernicus was one of the people who was baptized by this new trend. It was rather natural that Copernicus and J. Kepler, who believed that the sun, the most sacred of all celestial bodies, and the sun as the source from which everything flows out from the center, should be at the center of the universe, would rewrite the Ptolemaic geocentric model of the universe into a heliocentric model as a result of such solar worship ideology. …

…12世紀以降アリストテレス主義と結んだキリスト教神学がスコラ学としてギリシア的な宇宙像を受け入れたとき，半ば意識的に拒否されたプラトン，新プラトン主義関係の文献が，フィレンツェを中心に15世紀後半にラテン語に翻訳され，一つの思想運動に発展すると，その中にはさまれていたヘリオス信仰(ヘルメス主義や新プラトン主義に強く見られる)が西欧世界をふうびすることになった。フィレンツェ･プラトニズムの雄M.フィチーノは《太陽と光についてDe sole et lumine》を著して，その先鞭をつけたが，こうした新傾向の洗礼を受けた一人にN.コペルニクスがいた。まさしく天体の中でももっとも神聖な太陽こそ，そして中心からすべてを〈流出〉する源としての太陽こそ，宇宙の中心にあるべきであるとするコペルニクスやJ.ケプラーが，プトレマイオス流の地球中心的宇宙モデルを太陽中心的モデルに書き換えることになったのは，そうした太陽崇拝思想の結果としてむしろ自然なことであった。…
