Architectural term. The spherical triangular parts found at the four circumscribing corners of a dome placed on a square plan. An early representative example is the dome of the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul (construction began in 532), and is commonly found in Romanesque cathedrals in southwestern France and occasionally in Romanesque buildings in Italy. It developed during the Renaissance along with the spread of domed churches. It was also commonly used in Islamic buildings due to the influence of Byzantine architecture.
