From August to September, it blooms red, five-petal flowers with a diameter of about 20 cm, similar to American Hibiscus. It is a diurnal flower that opens in the morning and closes in the evening, and a new flower blooms every day. It is native to Georgia and Florida in the United States, and is planted in flower beds. It is very hardy and resistant to both heat and cold, and will bloom every year even if left unattended in a sunny, well-ventilated place. アオイ科（APG分類：アオイ科）ヒビスカス属（フヨウ属）の耐寒性多年草。コウショッキ（紅蜀葵）ともいう。高さ約2メートルに達する。葉は大形で、モミジ状の切れ込みがある。8～9月、径約20センチメートルでアメリカフヨウに似た赤色の5弁花を開く。朝開いて夕方閉じる一日花で、毎日新しい花を開く。アメリカのジョージア、フロリダ地方原産で、花壇に植えられる。非常にじょうぶで耐暑性、耐寒性もあり、日当り、風通しのよい所なら放任しても毎年開花する。大株になるので、株間は1メートルは必要である。冬季は地上部が枯れ込むので、地際(じぎわ)で刈り取るとよい。繁殖は実生(みしょう)もできるが、開花が2年目からになるので、一般には株分けがよい。株分けは春、発芽前に行う。近年モミジアオイとアメリカフヨウの種間交配種ができ、園芸品種として観賞される。
