Press Complaints Commission

Press Complaints Commission
PCC is a self-regulatory body in the UK that handles specific complaints from newspaper readers. It receives and investigates the complaint, judges it against its principles, which include accurate reporting based on facts and the protection of privacy, and issues recommendations to the media and publishes the results. It was established in January 1991, succeeding the Press Council, which was established in 1953. It is a self-regulatory body and therefore has no legal power. In response to public fears that the concentration of newspaper ownership was distorting reporting and suppressing the expression of diversity of opinion, based on the experiences before and during World War II, the UK government established the Royal Commission on the Press within Parliament in 1946 and conducted a thorough investigation of the newspaper industry.
