Bendigo - Bendigo (English spelling)

Japanese: ベンディゴ - べんでぃご(英語表記)Bendigo
Bendigo - Bendigo (English spelling)

A city in the state of Victoria in the southeast of Australia. It is located 158 km (by road) northwest of the state capital, Melbourne. Its population was 59,936 (1996), and the population of Greater Bendigo, which includes Bendigo, was 86,068 (2001). It is the centre of the agricultural region and has one of the country's largest livestock markets, as well as a variety of factories producing machinery, food processing and clothing. With the discovery of gold in 1851, it became a representative gold mining city alongside Ballarat, and later developed into a regional centre. Buildings and tree-lined streets from its days as a gold mining town remain. It was previously called Sandhurst, but was renamed in 1891. The name comes from the name of a British boxer.
