Mototsuna Kutsuki

A military commander in the Sengoku period. His father was Harutsuna, and his mother was the daughter of Asukai Masatsuna. Shogun Ashikaga Yoshiteru, who was in conflict with Miyoshi Nagayoshi, spent less than a year from 1551 and more than four years from 1552 in Kutsukidani (Kutsuki Village, Shiga Prefecture), the territory of the Kutsuki clan, and Mototsuna's uncles served as his attendants. After Yoshiteru's assassination, in 1568, Mototsuna was granted his territory by Ashikaga Yoshiaki. In 1570, when Oda Nobunaga attacked Echizen Asakura Yoshikage and was blocked from retreat by Azai Nagamasa, Mototsuna led his troops across Kutsuki to Kyoto, and served Nobunaga and then Toyotomi Hideyoshi. In 1595, he served as the deputy governor of the Takashima District Treasury. In the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600, he initially sided with Mitsunari Ishida and was only granted an assured stipend of 9,595 koku for the Kutsuki Manor and other lands, but later joined the Tokugawa side in the Battle of Osaka. He maintained his territory, which he had held since the Middle Ages, and paved the way for him to become a feudal lord in the early modern period.

戦国時代の武将。父は晴綱。母は飛鳥井雅綱の娘。三好長慶と対立した将軍足利義輝が天文20(1551)年より1年足らず,さらに同22年より4年余りを朽木氏の本領朽木谷(滋賀県朽木村)で過ごした際,叔父たちがこれに近侍。元綱は義輝暗殺後の永禄11(1568)年,足利義昭から所領を安堵された。元亀1(1570)年,越前朝倉義景を攻めた織田信長が浅井長政の寝返りにあって退路を阻まれた際,朽木越えで京都に導くなどの功績をあげ,信長,次いで豊臣秀吉に仕えた。文禄4(1595)年,高島郡蔵入地の代官を務める。慶長5(1600)年の関ケ原の戦では最初石田三成方に属したため,朽木荘など9595石の安堵にとどまったが,その後徳川方として大坂の陣に参加。中世以来の所領を維持し,近世大名への道を開いた。
