...The Nagauta singers of this period included Sakata Heishiro, Matsushima Shogoro I, and Yoshizumi Kosaburo I, the shamisen players were Kineya Kisaburo VII, Kineya Shinuemon I, Kineya Yasaburo I, and Kineya Chujiro I, and the musicians were Uno Choshichi. In the Meiwa period (1764-72), Fujita Yoshiji I, a former Itchu-bushi tayu (a traditional Japanese performer), created a style of uta joruri that added joruri tunes to Nagauta (e.g. Yoshiwara Suzume, Ataka Matsu), and also introduced a new style of nagauta, called Muchizakura Usa no Mitegura, to the Osatsuma-bushi. During this period, dance virtuoso actors such as Ichimura Uzaemon IX appeared among the male actors, and as a result of breaking down the tradition that dance was the exclusive domain of female actors, masculine pieces were born.

...He was well-received for his naturally beautiful voice, and audiences gathered to hear him sing Nagauta. He was said to be "a rare song that draws spectators, past and present."
