British Viceroy of India. Second son of the Duke of Portland, who served as Prime Minister. After serving in the army, he became Governor of Madras in 1803 (until 1806), Governor of Bengal in 1828, and then became the first Viceroy of India in 1833. During his rule, he employed Indian officials and acknowledged their involvement, but aimed to introduce European principles to India. He invited advisors such as Macaulay, who would later become a historian, to reform the administrative, judicial, and police systems, and promoted thorough English education. He also banned the practice of widow burning (sutti) and disbanded religious assassins. After returning to India in 1837, he became a member of the House of Representatives.

英国のインド総督。首相を務めたポートランド公の次男。陸軍勤務ののち，1803年マドラス知事(−1806年)，1828年ベンガル総督を経て1833年初代インド総督となった。その統治においてはインド人官吏を採用してその関与を認めながら，ヨーロッパ的な原理をインドに導入することを旨とし，のちの歴史家マコーレーなどの顧問を招いて行政・司法・警察などの機構改革を行い，英語教育の徹底をはかった。一方，寡婦焚死（サティー）の慣習を禁止し，宗教的暗殺団の解散を断行した。1837年帰国後，下院議員となる。
