Tanabata dance by young girls was popular from the early Edo period to the Kyoho era (1716-36). It is a type of Bon dance and was also called Komachi dance. In his book "Ina no Nakaji," Sugae Masumi describes the Tanabata dance he saw in Senba, Shinshu (Senba, Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture) on the night of Tanabata in 1783 (Tenmei 3), writing, "As if to move away, standing in a pure and clear sky, the menohara gathered in great numbers, and singing with their sasaras, how they will admonish the stars this night." He also writes that on the night of the welcoming fire on July 13, a dance similar to the Tanabata dance was paraded through the town. The Ashigara Sasara Dance of Minamiashigara City, Kanagawa Prefecture, was originally a dance performed by young girls and is said to have descended from the Tanabata Dance. They sing early modern folk songs to the accompaniment of the Binzasara and small drums. The Bon Dance of Kinuki, Unnan City, Shimane Prefecture, is also called the Tanabata Dance. At the Tanabata Dance of Ichiki, Ozato, Ichikikushikino City, Kagoshima Prefecture, young men perform a drum dance and parade around with dolls of deer, tigers, and cows.
