Dore - Which (English spelling) Gustave Doré

French painter and illustrator. Born in Strasbourg. He showed early talent for drawing and worked on lithographs. At the age of 15, while attending high school in Paris, he was commissioned by publisher Philippon to have his illustrations published in the journal Journal pour L'Ire. He made a name for himself with his illustrations for Rabelais in 1854 and Balzac's Les Humors in the following year. He went on to illustrate a variety of books, including La Fontaine, Don Quixote, and the Bible, while also producing semi-reportage-like illustrations, such as illustrations from his research on the Crimean War and the slums of London. Although he was extremely well-known as an illustrator, his oil paintings were not very well received in Paris. However, he was highly acclaimed in London from an early stage, and the Doray Gallery was established in 1867. Van Gogh's masterpiece Les Prisoners Exercising was based on a leaf from his Pilgrimage to London. He died in Paris.

フランスの画家、挿絵画家。ストラスブール生まれ。早くから素描の才を示し、石版画を手がける。パリの高校在学中の15歳のとき、出版者フィリッポンの依頼を受けて『ジュルナール・プール・リール』紙に挿絵を掲載するようになり、1854年にはラブレーの挿絵、翌年にはバルザックの『風流滑稽譚(こっけいたん)』の挿絵で名をあげた。その後もラ・フォンテーヌ、『ドン・キホーテ』、聖書などさまざまな書物の挿絵を制作する一方、クリミア戦争やロンドンのスラム街での取材による挿絵など、なかばルポルタージュ的なものも描いている。挿絵画家としての彼の名声はきわめて高かったが、パリでは彼の油彩はさほどの評価を受けなかった。しかし、ロンドンでは早くから評価され、「ドレ・ギャラリー」の設立は1867年である。ゴッホの名作『囚人たちの運動』は、彼の『ロンドン巡礼』の一葉によっている。パリに没。
