…In the Christian church before the 18th century Western Enlightenment, the Gospels of the New Testament were simply read as biographies of Jesus, and the historical accuracy of their descriptions was rarely questioned. However, the method of academic historical research based on the modern historical consciousness of the Enlightenment inspired criticism of traditional church doctrine and academic, critical research into the life of Jesus, primarily in German Protestant theology.
