Historian. Born on April 15, 1877 in Himeji, Hyogo Prefecture. Graduated from First High School and the Department of National History at the College of Letters of the Imperial University (receiving a pocket watch as a gift from the Emperor). Became a historiographer and then an official at the Imperial University, and in 1911 (Meiji 44), he became an associate professor at the College of Letters of the Imperial University of Tokyo (concurrent post), in 1920 (Taisho 9), chief administrative officer of the Historiographical Department (later Director of the Historiographical Institute), in 1923 (concurrent post), and finally retired in 1938 (Showa 13). During that time, he traveled all over the country to collect historical materials and guided the younger generation, building the foundations of today's Historiographical Institute, and also making great achievements in cultural and Buddhist history, playing an active role in the preservation and publication of historical materials. He was a member of the Imperial Academy. In 1952 (Showa 27), he was awarded the Order of Culture. He was an ardent believer in Shinshu Buddhism. He passed away on October 13, 1955.
