A general term for apes belonging to the family Ceratoidea, subfamily Hylobatinae, order Primates. They are also called gibbons. They are widely distributed throughout Southeast Asia and are divided into one genus and eight species, including the white-handed gibbon Hylobates lar (illustration), the hoolock gibbon H. hooloch , and the black-and-white gibbon H. concolor , mainly based on differences in coat color, although the siamang (illustration) is sometimes classified as a separate genus. The head and body length is around 50 cm, but the upper limbs are long, about 2.5 times the length of the body, hence the name. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
