Collegio (English spelling)

Japanese: コレジヨ（英語表記）Collegio

One of the higher education facilities of the Catholic Church. In Japan, it was founded in Bungo Funai (Oita City) in 1580 by Jesuit A. Valignano. It was burned down in 1581 by the invasion of the Shimazu clan, and moved to Yamaguchi, then to Katsusa (the southwestern tip of the Shimabara Peninsula), Amakusa, and finally to Nagasaki. With the aim of training clergy and transmitting European culture, it taught philosophy, theology, and general culture, and also printed and published doctrinal books, dictionaries, and stories. カトリック教会の高等教育施設の一つ。日本では天正8 (1580) 年イエズス会士 A.バリニャーノにより豊後府内 (大分市) に創設された。同 14年島津氏の侵入によって焼失し，山口に移り，さらに加津佐 (島原半島南西端) ，天草を経て長崎へ移転。聖職者の養成とヨーロッパ文化の伝達を目的として，哲学，神学，一般教養を教え，教義書や辞書，物語などの印刷出版も行なった。 (→キリシタン版 ,　セミナリオ )
