A bird of the Anatidae family (illustration). It breeds in the mid-latitudes of Eurasia and North America. It migrates south in winter. It migrates to Japan as a winter bird and lives in lakes, rivers, and calm coastlines, but prefers freshwater. Some species breed in Hokkaido. It is about 51 cm long. As its name suggests, its beak is flatter than other ducks. The comb-like appendages on the edge of its beak are more developed than those of other species, and it takes in water from the tip of its beak and flushes it out through the comb, eating any microorganisms that remain inside.
