It is one of the relatively large families of monocotyledonous plants, with over 110 genera and about 1,500 species distributed throughout the world, mainly in the humid tropics. All are perennial plants, and those with stems that stand on the ground or that climb trees are limited to the tropics, but those that run horizontally across the ground, those that go underground, and those that develop into corms (bulbs) are commonly found in temperate regions.
