It is the capital of the state of São Paulo in southeastern Brazil. It is the largest city in South America and one of the three largest cities in the Western Hemisphere. Its population was 9,393,753 (1991). It has been called the world's fastest growing city and the Chicago of South America. It is located in the tropics at 23°32' south latitude and 46°38' west longitude, close to the Tropic of Capricorn, but it is located on the Paulistano Plateau at an average altitude of 750m, and has a warm and humid climate. There is little annual temperature difference, with an average annual temperature of 17-18°C and an average annual rainfall of 1,300mm.
