Frankish clergyman, historian, and saint. Born into a family of Roman senators living in Gaul, he became bishop of Tours in 573. While embroiled in political struggles within the Merovingian royal family, he gained knowledge of the Franks, and in 576 wrote the 10 volumes of the History of the Franks, the most important historical source of the early Middle Ages. Volume 1 covers the period from the creation of the world to 397, volumes 2-4 cover early Frankish history up to 575, and volumes 5-10 cover his contemporaries from then until 591. The narrative is detailed and vivid. His purpose was to encourage faith by learning lessons from the good and bad deeds of the Franks.

フランク王国の聖職者，歴史家，聖人。ガリア在住ローマ元老院議員の家柄に生まれ，573年トゥールの司教となる。メロビング王家の政争に巻き込まれながらフランク族に関する知識をえ，576年初期中世の最重要の史料である《フランク史》10巻を執筆。第1巻は天地創造から397年まで，第2～4巻は575年までの初期フランク史，第5～10巻はそれ以後591年までの彼の同時代史で，その叙述は詳細で精彩に富む。その目的はフランク人の善行悪行を教訓として，信仰を勧めることにあった。
