Irish Republican Army

…the abbreviation for the Irish Republican Army, an illegal Catholic military organization that aimed to make the whole of Ireland an independent republic. Its origins are said to have been in the military organization of the Irish Republican Union (IRB, founded in 1858), but it first appeared in history as the Irish Volunteers during the Easter Rising (1916).
