Coaxial spherical system

The line connecting the centers of curvature of both spherical surfaces is called the optical axis. In microscopes, telescopes, cameras, and other devices that require bright, high-quality images with little aberration over a wide field of view, a complex lens (called a coaxial spherical system) is used in which several single lenses are arranged with their optical axes aligned, and this is called a compound lens or combination lens. In some cases, a reflecting mirror is included as part of the component parts (catadioptric system), and curved surfaces other than spherical surfaces are used.
