Benishitaba (red underwing) - Benishitaba (English spelling) Catocala electa
An insect of the Noctuidae family of the Lepidoptera order. Its hind wings are bright pink and its forewings are grey and bark-like, and when at rest it hides them underneath. Its wings span about 7cm. It is found in temperate Eurasia, and is not uncommon on the Japanese mainland. The larvae attach to willows, emerge in summer, and overwinter as eggs. There are three species of red-winged benishitaba in Japan, and the similar species C. nupta (Ezobenishitaba) lives mainly in central and northern Honshu, where its larvae attach to poplar and poplar. The hind wings of C. dula (Onibenishitaba) are almost vermilion, and they attach to Japanese oak, sawtooth oak, and oak.
