It is the capital of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, a U.S. territory in the Midwest Pacific Ocean, northern Micronesia. It is also called Saipan. It is located on the west coast of Saipan Island, facing Tangapag Bay. Its population is 23,494 (1991). In 1924, when the Mariana Islands became a Japanese South Seas Mandate territory under the League of Nations, it became its administrative center. After World War II, it became the capital of the U.S. trusteeship territory. It also became the capital of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands when it was established in 1978.
