It is the capital of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, a U.S. territory in the Midwest Pacific Ocean, northern Micronesia. It is also called Saipan. It is located on the west coast of Saipan Island, facing Tangapag Bay. Its population is 23,494 (1991). In 1924, when the Mariana Islands became a Japanese South Seas Mandate territory under the League of Nations, it became its administrative center. After World War II, it became the capital of the U.S. trusteeship territory. It also became the capital of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands when it was established in 1978. In 1990, the trusteeship ended.

太平洋中西部、ミクロネシア北部、アメリカ自治領の北マリアナ連邦の首都。サイパンともいう。サイパン島西岸、タンガパグTangapag湾に面する。人口2万3494(1991)。1924年、国際連盟によってマリアナ諸島が日本の南洋委任統治領となった際、その行政中心地となった。第二次世界大戦後はアメリカの信託統治領の首都。さらに1978年、北マリアナ連邦成立にあたってその首都となった。1990年、信託統治が終了。
