The island was once called Boriquén or Borinquen by the native Taino people, but in 1493 Columbus landed on the island and named it San Juan Bautista. Colonization began in 1508 by Juan Ponce de León (1460?-1521) and others, and the colony was established in present-day San Juan. The name Puerto Rico, which means "rich port," was originally the name given to the colony, and later replaced the name of the island. …
