A regional capital city in the southern part of New South Wales, Australia. Population 41,000 (1991). 480 km (road distance) west-southwest of Sydney, on the left bank of the Murrumbidgee River. A road to Adelaide and a railway to Melbourne pass through the city. It is a distribution center for sheep and wheat from the western slope of the Eastern Highlands to the Riverina region, and has an agricultural college, an agricultural experiment station, and light industries. Founded in 1849, it became a city in 1949. The name comes from an aboriginal word meaning the sound of a crow's cry. [Taniuchi Tatsu]
