A regional capital city in the southern part of New South Wales, Australia. Population 41,000 (1991). 480 km (road distance) west-southwest of Sydney, on the left bank of the Murrumbidgee River. A road to Adelaide and a railway to Melbourne pass through the city. It is a distribution center for sheep and wheat from the western slope of the Eastern Highlands to the Riverina region, and has an agricultural college, an agricultural experiment station, and light industries.
