...The terracotta reliefs that decorated the base of the stupa are one of the masterpieces of Pala sculpture. Mahāsthān, located to the northeast, is said to have been the capital of the former Pundravardhana state, and ruins dating back to the Gupta period are scattered inside and outside its walls, including stone carvings from the Gupta period. Several ruins of Buddhist temples have been excavated around Maināmatī, near the city of Komira in the southeast, and one of them, called Sharbang Monastery, is slightly smaller than the one at Paharpur but has a similar layout and was also decorated with terracotta panels. ...
