A step (also called a foot) is a group of notes that constitutes a phonological unit in poetry. It corresponds to a bar in music and is a time unit that integrates the length, strength, and pitch of sounds. In Greek and Latin poetics, a step was thought to arise from the arrangement of long and short syllables such as (daktylos), (spondeios), (anapaistos), (trochaios), and (iambos). In British poetics, a step was thought to arise from the arrangement of strong and weak syllables such as ×× (dactyl), (spondee), ×× (anapæst), × (trochee), and × (iambus).

　音歩(音脚ともいう)は詩歌の音律的単位をなす音群であって，音楽の小節barに相応し，音声の長短，強弱，高低を総合する時間的の単位である。ギリシア，ラテンなどの詩学では(ダクテュロスdaktylos)，(スポンデイオスspondeios)，(アナパイストスanapaistos)，(トロカイオスtrochaios)，(イアンボスiambos)のような長短のシラブルの配列から音歩が生ずると考えられた。イギリスの詩学では××(ダクティルdactyl)，(スポンディーspondee)，××(アナピーストanapæst)，×(トロキーtrochee)，×(アイアンバスiambus)などの強弱のシラブルの配列によって音歩が生ずると考えられた。…
