A treaty concluded in 1854 between the Edo Shogunate and Russia. It is also called the Treaty of Shimoda. It was signed in Shimoda with envoy Putyatin. Its contents were almost the same as the Treaty of Peace and Amity between the United States and Japan, but it stipulated the opening of the ports of Shimoda, Hakodate, and Nagasaki, established the border between Japan and Russia between the islands of Etorofu and Uruppu, and left Sakhalin as a mixed settlement for people from both countries, with no border established.
