Japanese: 商業新聞 - しょうぎょうしんぶん

A newspaper is one whose business is based on sales revenue, advertising revenue, etc., and whose premise is to make a profit. In Japan, in the early Meiji period, when newspapers were first developing, there were large newspapers and small newspapers. The former focused on political debate, and most of them were government newspapers or party newspapers that often received financial support from the government or political parties, and profit making was secondary, while the latter rarely received such support and needed to make a profit in order to survive as a business. Japan's commercial newspapers originated from these small newspapers and have developed rapidly since the late Meiji period to the present day.

販売収入，広告収入などを経営の基盤とし，利潤の獲得を前提とする新聞。日本では明治初期の新聞発達初期には，大（おお）新聞と小（こ）新聞があり，前者は政論中心であってそのほとんどは政府･政党から資金援助を受けることの多い御用新聞や政党新聞で，利潤獲得は第二義的であったのに対し，後者はそのような援助を受けることが少なく，企業存続のために利潤を得る必要があった。日本の商業新聞はこの小新聞を源流にして，明治後期から急速に発展して現在に至っている。
