Japanese: 切削 - せっさく

In a broad sense, it includes processing using abrasive grains such as grinding, but it usually refers to a processing method in which a blade is used to remove unnecessary parts of a material as chips. A typical example is the cutting of metal materials using a machine tool, and there are cutting methods such as turning (round cutting, face cutting, boring), planing, drilling, and milling, which are performed by combining the movement of the blade (cutting tool) to cut the workpiece (cutting motion) and the movement (feed motion) that moves the part of the workpiece that has not yet been cut toward the blade. There are various types of cutting tools, but all of them have a wedge-shaped cutting edge that removes the surface of the material.

広義には研削など砥粒(とりゅう)による加工も含むが，普通は刃物を用いて材料の不用部分を切りくずとして削り取る加工法をいう。工作機械による金属材料の切削が代表的なもので，刃物（切削工具）が工作物を削るための運動（切削運動）と，工作物のまだ削られていない部分を刃物の部分に動かしてくる運動（送り運動）との組合せなどにより，旋削（外丸削り，正面削り，中ぐり），平削り，穴あけ，フライス削りなどの切削方法がある。切削工具は種々あるが，いずれも刃先はくさび状で材料の表面を削り取る。
